Wooden Toys Printing

Wooden toys with printed designs

Wooden toys have been a staple of childhood for generations. Their natural warmth, durability, and eco-friendly appeal make them a preferred choice for parents and manufacturers alike. However, printing on wood presents unique challenges that require specialized inks and techniques.

The Challenge of Wood as a Substrate

Wood is a porous, organic material with variable surface characteristics. Unlike plastics, wood absorbs ink differently depending on grain pattern, moisture content, and surface finish. This variability demands inks that can adapt to these conditions while maintaining vibrant colors and strong adhesion.

Preparing Wood for Printing

Proper surface preparation is essential for successful printing on wooden toys. The wood must be sanded smooth, cleaned of oils and dust, and sometimes sealed with a primer to create a uniform printing surface. Our Farbatoy and RUCOINX ink ranges are specially formulated to work with prepared wood surfaces.

Ink Selection for Wooden Toys

For wooden toys, we recommend water-based or UV-curable inks that penetrate the wood grain while maintaining color vibrancy. These inks must also comply with EN-71, BIS 9873-3, and other international safety standards since wooden toys are often used by infants and young children.

Printing Techniques

Screen printing and pad printing are the most common methods for decorating wooden toys. Screen printing is ideal for flat surfaces and larger designs, while pad printing excels at applying detailed images to curved or irregular shapes. Spray coating can also be used for overall color application or protective clear coats.

Compliance and Safety

All inks used on wooden toys must be non-toxic, free from heavy metals, phthalates, and other hazardous substances. Our inks are tested by accredited laboratories (SGS, Intertek, TUV) and comply with EN-71, RoHS, REACH, and other global standards.
